A new quarter means a new set of Chase Freedom 5x bonus categories, and Q1 2026 is an interesting mix.

Pairing dining, Norwegian Cruise Line, and American Heart Association feels a little random. One category almost everyone will use, one thatโ€™s very specific, and one thatโ€™s more values-driven than spend-driven.

From January 1 through March 31, 2026, Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Flex cardholders can earn 5% cash back (5x Ultimate Rewards points) on up to $1,500 in combined purchases, once the categories are activated.

And if you have the Freedom Flex, thereโ€™s an extra twist this quarter: dining can earn up to 7x points.

Hereโ€™s everything you need to know about the Chase Freedom Q1 2026 categories, how to maximize each one, and how I personally plan to make the most of them.

Chase Freedom Q1 2026 5x Categories (Januaryโ€“March 2026)

For Q1 2026, the rotating 5% bonus categories are:

  • Dining
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • American Heart Association

These categories apply to both Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex cards.

Youโ€™ll earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases per card from January 1 through March 31, 2026, after activation. Once you hit the cap on a card, purchases earn the standard 1% cash back.

Important activation reminder:
If you have both Freedom and Freedom Flex, you must activate the categories separately on each card. Activation does not carry over between cards. The activation deadline for Q1 2026 is March 14, 2026.

How the Chase Freedom 5x Categories Work

Hereโ€™s a quick refresher on how Chaseโ€™s rotating categories work โ€” especially important if youโ€™re juggling more than one Freedom card:

  • New 5% categories are released each quarter
  • You must manually activate them on each card
  • Each card has its own $1,500 quarterly cap
  • Spending outside the categories earns 1% back

If you max out the $1,500 cap on one card, youโ€™ll earn:

  • 7,500 Ultimate Rewards points, or
  • $75 in cash back

If you have both the Freedom and Freedom Flex cards, thatโ€™s potentially 15,000 Ultimate Rewards points (or more, keep reading) in Q1 alone.

Dining: The Anchor Category (and Where Freedom Flex Shines)

Dining is the anchor category for Q1 2026 and the reason this quarter works for so many people, even if the other categories donโ€™t apply.

What Counts as Dining?

Eligible dining purchases typically include:

  • Sit-down restaurants
  • Fast casual and fast food
  • Takeout
  • Coffee shops
  • Food delivery services (when coded as dining)

As always, eligibility depends on how the merchant codes the transaction, but dining is one of the most reliable Chase categories overall.

How Dining Earns 5% (or 7%) in Q1 2026

This is where things get interesting.

Chase Freedom (Original)

  • 5% from the Q1 bonus category
  • On up to $1,500 in combined quarterly spend

Simple and straightforward.

Chase Freedom Flex: Why Dining Can Earn 7x

The Chase Freedom Flex normally earns:

  • 3x points on dining year-round

In Q1 2026, dining is also a 5% rotating category, which means:

  • 1x points (on everything per Freedom Flex)
  • 4x points from the quarterly bonus
  • +2x additional points from Flexโ€™s built-in dining bonus

Total: 7x Ultimate Rewards points on dining, on up to $1,500 in Q1 spending.

This makes Freedom Flex one of the most rewarding dining cards you can use this quarter especially for everyday restaurant, takeout, and coffee purchases.

If I have to choose one card at a restaurant this quarter, itโ€™s the Freedom Flex, no question.

How I Plan to Max Out Q1 2026 (Without Spending $3,000 on Dining)

Hereโ€™s the honest truth: Iโ€™m not spending $3,000 on dining out in a single quarter, even with both the Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex activated.

Instead, my strategy is about pulling forward spending I already know is coming later in the year and earning elevated rewards on it now.

Why Dining Is Worth Prioritizing

Many cards already offer solid dining rewards:

Those are all good options, but 5x or 7x beats 3x or 4x. Q1 2026 is one of those windows where it makes sense to intentionally route dining-related spend to Chase Freedom cards.

Using Gift Cards to Pull Forward Future Dining

One of my favorite ways to maximize dining quarters without overspending is restaurant gift cards.

Got a favorite local spot? Buy a gift card now, earn 5x (or 7x on Flex), and enjoy it later.

Benefits:

  • Gift cards usually code as dining (confirm before purchasing or make a small purchase before spending more)
  • Youโ€™re not creating new spend, just shifting timing
  • Future nights out earn bonus points without extra cost

This way, Q1 rewards become Q3 and Q4 nights out.

Delivery and Coffee: Everyday Habits Turned Into Travel

I also know Iโ€™ll be ordering delivery throughout the year. Instead of earning 1x or 3x later, I like to stack rewards now.

United MileagePlus X for Gift Cards

It’s not a secret I love the United MileagePlus X app. It’s something no other airline offers, and it works out great for me because we’re loyal to United.

The app lets you buy gift cards for popular merchants, which I then pay for using my Chase Freedom or Freedom Flex. Some of my go-to merchants include:

Buy digital gift cards for:

  • DoorDash
  • Uber Eats
  • Grubhub
  • Starbucks
  • Chipotle

Hereโ€™s why this works so well for Q1 2026:

  1. Multiplying rewards: When I buy these gift cards, I earn 5x Ultimate Rewards points from the Chase Freedom bonus category (or 7x on Freedom Flex) plus United miles from MileagePlus X.
  2. No extra spend: Iโ€™m buying things I already plan to use later, like coffee or takeout, so Iโ€™m not forcing purchases just to earn points.
  3. Stackable travel rewards: These purchases simultaneously earn Ultimate Rewards points and airline miles, giving me maximum flexibility for travel later in the year.

For example, loading a Starbucks card through MileagePlus X in Q1 turns a routine coffee run into a double-reward opportunity. Same for DoorDash gift cards โ€” Iโ€™m earning both United miles and Chase Ultimate rewards on purchases I would have made anyway.

Over time, small actions like this really add up, especially when paired with the Freedom Flex 7x dining bonus. Itโ€™s a simple, low-effort way to stack rewards and make everyday spending work harder for travel.

Norwegian Cruise Line: High-Impact, One-Time Spending

Norwegian Cruise Line is the most specific category this quarter โ€” and also potentially the most rewarding.

What Qualifies?

  • Cruise fares booked directly with Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Deposits or pre-cruise packages purchased directly with NCL

Third-party travel agencies will likely not qualify.

Who This Works For

This category is ideal if:

  • You already have a Norwegian cruise planned
  • You need to pay a deposit or final balance
  • Youโ€™re booking a cruise in early 2026

A single cruise booking can max out the $1,500 cap in one transaction โ€” high impact, low effort.

American Heart Association: A Flexible Bonus Category

The American Heart Association category is the most unusual part of Q1 2026 and one I’m not sure many people will use.

What Counts?

  • Donations must be made directly to the organization
  • Must code as a charitable donation
  • Third-party fundraising platforms may not qualify

How to Use This Category

Instead, itโ€™s a way to round out the quarter:

  • Donate if you were planning to
  • Rewards accumulate without extra spending

Donations may still be tax-deductible, but check with your tax professional to confirm.

How to Maximize the $1,500 Cap With Both Cards

With the Freedom and Freedom Flex credit cards, you can:

  • Use Freedom Flex for dining (earn 7x)
  • Use either for cruises or charitable donations
  • Activate both cards separately

This approach lets you:

  • Maximize points without overspending
  • Spread spending across two caps
  • Stack everyday habits (delivery, coffee) for future travel

Redeeming Your Chase Freedom Rewards

Q1 2026 points can be redeemed for:

  • Statement credits
  • Direct deposit
  • Gift cards
  • Travel through Chase

If you hold a Chase Sapphire Preferred or Reserve or an Ink Preferred, you can:

  • Transfer Freedom points
  • Redeem for higher-value travel
  • Transfer to airline/hotel partners

This is where Freedom cards really shine long-term.

Is Chase Freedom Q1 2026 Worth Maxing Out?

Absolutely, if:

  • You spend regularly on dining
  • You have a Norwegian cruise planned
  • You want a simple way to earn points early in the year

Even if dining is the only category you use, Freedom Flex 7x makes it easy to earn significant rewards. Other categories simply add optional upside if they aligned with your spending habits.

Chase Freedom Q1 2026 FAQs

Do these categories apply to both Freedom and Freedom Flex?
Yes. But each card must be activated separately to earn 5% (or 7x on Flex).

Can dining really earn 7x on Freedom Flex?
Yes. Freedom Flex earns 3x on dining year-round, and Q1 adds 5x bonus points. Total: 7x.

Do I need to activate both cards?
Yes. Activation does not carry over.

What happens after I hit $1,500?
Remaining purchases earn 1% until the next quarter.

Final Thoughts: An Unusual but Rewarding Start to 2026

Q1 2026 may look unusual on paper, but itโ€™s very practical, especially with the Freedom Flex.

Dining does the heavy lifting, cruises offer high-impact upside, and the charitable donation category adds flexible rewards. With separate caps and thoughtful strategies like gift cards and preloaded delivery balances, thereโ€™s plenty of room to earn meaningful points without overspending.

Activate your categories, pick the right card for each purchase, and let Q1 set the tone for a strong rewards year.
