JW Marriott Guanacaste Review — If you’re dreaming of a luxury escape on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, the JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort & Spa offers a perfect mix of relaxation, natural beauty, and upscale amenities.

Earlier this year, we spent five nights at this resort, booked entirely with Marriott Bonvoy points, and it delivered the tropical getaway we were hoping for. From its sprawling oceanfront pool and gorgeous ocean views to delicious on-site dining and easy access to nearby beaches and towns, the JW Marriott Guanacaste is a fantastic base for exploring the beauty of Costa Rica.

Beyond the resort’s beautiful atmosphere, we found it perfect for families too. Our stay was full of small touches—from a free stuffed sloth for our son at check-in to activities like s’mores by the pool and bike tours around the property. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing pool day, an adventurous day trip, or simply a quiet corner with ocean views, this resort has plenty to offer.

Here’s everything you need to know before you book!

Getting to the JW Marriott Guanacaste

The JW Marriott Guanacaste is located on Costa Rica’s northwestern Pacific coast, in the Guanacaste province. Fun fact: Guanacaste is actually named after Costa Rica’s national tree, the guanacaste tree, but the region is often affectionately called the “Gold Coast” for its stunning golden beaches and sunny weather.

The closest and most convenient airport is Liberia Airport (LIR), about 1.5 hours away by car. If you fly into San José (SJO) — Costa Rica’s larger international airport — be prepared for a longer drive of approximately 4 to 5 hours to reach the resort.

Transportation Options: We recommend renting a car to explore the area freely. While the resort offers shuttles and taxis, having your own vehicle lets you discover nearby beaches, towns, and attractions at your own pace.

Location of the JW Marriott Guanacaste

The JW Marriott Guanacaste is tucked away inside the Hacienda Pinilla community.

Be prepared: getting to the resort involves driving down a long, rocky road. We were convinced we’d taken a wrong turn, but fear not, that’s the right way! Once you arrive, the property feels nicely removed from the crowds and surrounded by natural beauty.

Hacienda Pinilla itself is a sprawling coastal community that includes residential areas, a golf course, beaches, and some dining options. The resort sits along a rugged stretch of Guanacaste coastline, perfect for sunsets and beach walks, though the shoreline directly in front of the hotel is rocky and not ideal for swimming.

Fortunately, beautiful swimmable beaches like Playa Avellanas and beach towns like Tamarindo are just a short drive away, giving you the best of both worlds: seclusion in Hacienda Pinilla with quick access to Guanacaste’s beach culture and amenities.

Guanacaste Province itself is famous for its dry tropical climate, scenic beaches, and outdoor activities like zip-lining, horseback riding, and volcano tours—making the JW Marriott Guanacaste an ideal base for exploring this beautiful region of Costa Rica.

Check-In & Welcome

At check-in, the staff were very nice and offered us a choice of welcome awards as Platinum Marriott members. We picked the free daily breakfast for our whole family (five days of breakfast for three people) instead of the alternative 1,000 points (there were other choices, but these were the only two I remember). Honestly, not sure who would choose the points over breakfast—but if that’s your jam, you do you! They also upgraded us to a highest floor ocean view room even though we’d only booked a standard room on points.

We received a complimentary welcome drink at check-in, and our toddler was gifted a sloth stuffed animal—a fun little touch, since sloths are everywhere in Costa Rica!

Cost of Stay & Points Redemption

How much does it cost to stay at the JW Marriott Guanacaste?

We redeemed a total of 171,200 Marriott Bonvoy points for our five-night stay at the JW Marriott Guanacaste. For the dates we stayed, the cash rate would have been around $860 per night—or about $4,300 total for five nights. Typical nightly rates in points vary due to Marriott’s dynamic pricing model, which means point costs fluctuate based on demand, season, and availability.

Cash Price Range: Cash rates for the JW Marriott Guanacaste generally range from around $450 to $1,000+ per night depending on season, room type, and occupancy. Lower prices are more common during the rainy (green) season or shoulder season, while peak dry season and holidays can push rates toward the higher end of the spectrum.

Point Pricing Range: Nights usually start around 40,000 points in the shoulder season and can climb up to 50,000+ points during high season or peak travel times.

Marriott’s Stay 5, Pay for 4 Benefit: When booking a five-night stay on points, Marriott often applies the “Stay 5, Pay for 4” promotion, which can significantly improve value by giving you a free night.

If you’re flexible with your travel dates, booking during the shoulder season or off-peak times can save you a substantial amount of money or points while still enjoying great weather and resort amenities.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, running from December through April, is by far the most popular time to visit JW Marriott Guanacaste—and for good reason. Expect abundant sunshine, warm temperatures, and clear skies that make for perfect beach days, pool lounging, and exploring the stunning Pacific coastline. This period is ideal if you’re seeking classic tropical weather and lively resort vibes.

That said, the shoulder seasons, particularly May to June and September to October, offer a compelling alternative for travelers looking for better rates and a more peaceful experience. These months usher in Costa Rica’s rainy season, but don’t let that deter you as the rain is often brief, leaving plenty of time to enjoy sunshine and outdoor adventures.

We visited in early May, right at the start of the shoulder season, and were pleasantly surprised. We packed raincoats and umbrellas in anticipation of the weather we were supposed to face. While much of the country is known to experience heavy rains during this time, our stay was marked by mostly clear skies with just a brief, refreshing rain shower on one afternoon. The lush greenery was at its peak, the crowds were thin, and the resort felt like a tranquil paradise.

If you’re flexible, visiting during shoulder season can mean more affordable rates, fewer tourists, and a beautiful landscape.

About the Room

We stayed in a top-floor ocean-view room, and it was a great space to unwind after busy days exploring Guanacaste.

The room had a private balcony with a nice view of the ocean and palm trees. We loved sitting out there in the mornings with coffee or catching the sunset in the evenings.

Inside, the decor featured lots of dark wood and warm colors, giving it a tropical feel different from many Marriotts. The room was spacious and comfortable, with a big, clean bathroom that included a jacuzzi tub and a separate shower. There was plenty of counter space, good water pressure, and plenty of towels.

A nice surprise was the fresh fruit platter waiting for us when we arrived, with pineapple, papaya, watermelon, and even some dragonfruit. Overall, the room was relaxing, and it definitely added to the enjoyment of our stay at the JW Marriott Guanacaste.

Breakfast Highlights

One of the absolute highlights of our stay was the breakfast buffet at the JW Marriott Guanacaste. As part of our Marriott Bonvoy Platinum status, we opted for free daily breakfast for the entire family and it turned out to be an excellent choice.

Each morning, we were among the first guests at the restaurant so we could grab a table outside on the patio. Not planned that way, but thank our toddler! It was peaceful and quiet, and we loved soaking in the environment before most of the resort fully woke up.

Inside, the breakfast spread was impressive and delicious, offering a mix of international favorites and authentic Costa Rican flavors:

  • Omelette Station: A chef was on hand to whip up omelets to order, with plenty of fresh veggies, meats, and cheeses.
  • Fresh, Local Fruits: The fruit selection featured plenty of choices, like pineapple, watermelon, papaya, passion fruit, and more. The Costa Rican bananas were especially incredible—sweet and bursting with flavor. Our son became completely hooked and kept requesting more each morning.
  • Handmade Tortillas: A standout feature was the tortilla station, where tortillas were pressed and cooked fresh on the griddle. The warm, slightly charred tortillas were amazing—perfect alongside scrambled eggs, shredded chicken, or simply eaten with a sprinkle of local cheese or guacamole.
  • Local Specialties: Options included traditional Costa Rican dishes like gallo pinto (rice and beans), sweet plantains, shredded chicken, and seasoned potatoes.
  • Pastries, Cereals, and More: For classic breakfast lovers, there was also a selection of pastries, muesli, parfaits, cereals, bacon, sausage, and breakfast potatoes.
